Do I Really Need To Take Supplements?

Do I Really Need To Take Supplements?

February 21, 2014 |  by  |  Nutrition

We strive to be healthy in a world where obstacles are thrown at us left and right. Work, family and financial stress, chemicals in our food, illness, and physical trauma, are all reason to pause and question supplementing. Here are a just a few things to consider:

Soil Health

Recent studies have shown that the fertility and quality of soil is much different now than soil in the 1950’s (not that long ago).

Necessary Nutrients

Can you eat enough food to get in all of your necessary nutrients? Since today’s food has a much lower nutrient density, we need to eat more food. This can be tough, because in today’s busy world, it’s challenging enough to eat regular meals. Any meal skippers out there? It happens to all of us!

Stress increases the need for nutrients. Whether it’s mental, emotional, physical, or existential, any stress on the body depletes important nutrients. B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and zinc are all needed during a stress response. With chronic stress, we need more of these nutrients. Yet at the same time, we’re depleting them. Double whammy!

“You can trace every sickness, every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency,” Dr. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel Prize winner.

For cells, tissues, organs, and systems to function optimally, they need to be fed. Nutrient deficiencies lead to imbalances in necessary and critical body functions. Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are also cofactors for natural body processes such as:

  • Digestion
  • Absorption and assimilation of nutrients
  • Circulation
  • Detoxification Elimination

As you all probably know by now, my philosophy is always food first. Supplements should only be started once the diet is fine-tuned. By fine-tuned, I mean listening to your body and the signals it gives you with the food you’re eating. How do you feel one to hours after a meal? Then, and only then, should supplements be titrated in while paying attention to reactions. I use diet check records in my programs for this. Supplements are just that, a supplement to a healthful diet, they do not and should not replace real food. What they can do is help make sure your body has everything it needs to cope with the daily dose of  stress that we’re all exposed to and heal when sickness comes around.

Always make sure you’re taking good quality supplements, and just like food, there is no “one size fits all” prescription. It’s best to work with a qualified practitioner to find out what your specific needs are. My favorite multi is Synergy-Com by UltraLife, Inc who customizes supplements to your Metabolic Type.
